Well, believe it or not, we are about to embark on another year. As we leave 2020 behind us, we look forward to new trends and new beginnings and the packaging industry is no exception. With that in mind, let’s take a look at we can expect from great packaging design in the New Year.

Small Images that Reveal What’s Inside

You know how you shake a box to try and tell what’s inside it before opening it? Well, if you received a package and you’re not sure what the contents are, shaking will not be necessary. Now, many brands are designing packaging that gives you a hint of what’s inside.

For instance, if your packaging contains tortilla chips, your packaging may have small triangles on it. If it’s makeup, you may have a picture of an attractive woman on the package.

A Vintage Unboxing Experience

The vintage trend has been ruling packaging design for some time now. And providing a terrific unboxing experience can set your company apart. Now manufacturers are bringing the two elements together with a vintage unboxing experience.

Expect to find vintage inspired textures, bottle shapes, package materials and image choices that make for a terrific unboxing experience and an amazing package design.

Bold, Abstract Geometric Designs

The geometric trend is another that’s been around for a few years. In 2021, branding companies will be taking it to the next level with bold shapes, sleek lines and abstract images. The goal is to make the packaging resemble fine art.

Anatomical Ink Drawing

Okay, get your mind out of the gutter. We’re not going to be seeing any human anatomy on packaging design. Rather these illustrations will more closely resemble an architectural or engineering blueprint. This new trend pays tribute to the minimalist designs that have been gaining traction over the last few years. Subject matter will gravitate towards animals, flora and fauna and the like.

Organic Color Blocking

Color blocking may typically be associated with bold geometrics, but in 2021 designers will be taking this to a softer place. Instead of the defined bright colors, these will be soft organic tones that use wavy lines to divide one form another. It appeals to the natural organic trend as it fits that image well.

Company Name Front and Center

In 2021, companies don’t want to take any risks when it comes to customers finding what they are looking for. Brand names and product names will be featured front and center. Designers will be working on creating logos that stand out to add interest to the package design.
